Norms achieved at Big Slick

The Friends would like to congratulate the players who achieved norms at the Big Slick International.

In the GM event, Yang-Fan Zhou won the event and achieved his first GM norm by drawing as Black with Samuel Franklin in the last round to achieve a score of 7/9.

In the IM event, Alan Merry who was the winner of the event with 7½/9 achieved an IM norm with a round to spare.

Alex Longson qualified for his FM title in the GM event, and was just ½ point short of an IM norm.


3rd Big Slick International, 22-30 June 2013

The Friends have provided a grant to support the 3rd Big Slick International event which Lawrence Cooper and Simon Williams are organising at Big Slick, Unit 10, Royal Oak Centre, Brighton Road, Purley, Surrey CR8 2BQ between 22 and 30 June.  There will be two separate 10 player nine round  events with one game a day, with one event offering GM norms and the other IM norms. ICSC World Individual Deaf Chess Championship, 27 September – 7 October 2012

The Friends provided support to the English Deaf Chess Association towards the participation of Lewis Martin in the 15th ISCS World Individual Deaf Chess Championships which took place in Kazakhstan from 27 September to 7 October 2012.  Making his debut in this event, Lewis had an excellent start in drawing with GM Gruenfeld, and won in the last round to finish 12th= (16th on tie break) on 5½/11. e2e4 London Diamond Jubilee Congress, 2 – 6 June 2012

The Friends supported the one off event organised by e2e4 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at Gatwick Airport over the double bank holiday weekend at the beginning of June to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.  The event encompassed a 9 round FIDE-rated Premier at which GM and IM norms were available, a 7 round FIDE-rated Challengers restricted to players rated below 2050 and a 7 round FIDE-rated Major restricted to players rated below 1800. Jessie Gilbert Celebration International

The 4th Jessie Gilbert Celebration International Chess Festival is being organised by Coulsdon Chess Fellowship from 20 to 28 August 2011.  This is being supported by the Friends, as have the first three Internationals.

The key event from the Friends perspective in the 9 round GM Open Swiss.  However, several FIDE-rated sections for all are being organised, as is a junior training challenge event on 24 August.
